About the event

When it was established in 1852, Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey was to be the largest cemetery in the world. It was intended to perpetually provide a last resting place for Londoners forevermore: being so vast it even had its own railway service to ferry the dearly departed to the wilds of Surrey - where the dead could no longer harm the living.

Over a quarter of a million people have been buried in this beautifully kept garden cemetery since its first burial in 1854. Far bigger than any of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries in London, such as Highgate or Brompton, join Sheldon from Cemetery Club as he reveals the deathly railway that brought thousands to their final resting place - and the wonderful social history that accompanies the permanent residents buried there, from iconic architect Zaha Hadid to American painter John Singer Sargent.

All aboard as we board the Necropolis Railway and discover some fascinating people's history.

The tour will begin at 7PM BST sharp - please ensure you log in with adequate time to get set up and connected on Zoom beforehand!
