About the event
The world's tallest freestanding clock tower is prominently located at the center of the University of Birmingham campus. It was constructed to honour Joseph Chamberlain, a significant figure in the University's founding. Chamberlain is a complex individual whose contributions to education and politics are both celebrated and critically examined in the 21st century.
In this event, public historian Sheldon Goodman will share the outcomes of his research from a project conducted in collaboration with the Student EDI Team. This initiative aims to acknowledge and highlight the University's historical foundations. The project thoughtfully addresses the challenging aspects of Chamberlain's history, including his imperialist views and policies, offering a balanced perspective that educates and informs. This event provides an opportunity to delve into the multifaceted legacy of a man who shaped Birmingham's educational landscape, while also addressing the broader implications of his actions and beliefs.
